Bruny Bits

Sitting off the southeastern coast of Tasmania, Australia, the 362 km2 Bruny Island is a popular tourist destination, renowned for its beautiful beaches, rugged coastline, and unique wildlife. Oh, and its chocolate.

April this year saw Cam Blake Photography and I joined by four wonderful guests to explore the island on a photographic workshop that covered all of the above, and more.

Bruny Island is actually two islands (North and South) joined together by a long, narrow, sandy isthmus known as The Neck, and our tour started there, taking time to look over the beautiful beach from the view point.

Neck Beach

After visiting Cape Bruny Lighthouse later that day, we visited The Neck again the next morning to take in sunrise from the same viewpoint, and were treated to some very beautiful, soft and gentle colours.

Sunrise over The Neck

The rest of the day was spent exploring the island, taking in forest tracks and beaches that allowed for both wider and more intimate landscape and detail shots. We were also treated to a view of one of the island’s famous white wallabies, happily grazing in an island garden.

Seaweed Swirl

Our last day, and a highlight of the trip, was spent exploring the dramatic coastline of the islands, on an always-amazing trip with Pennicott Wilderness Journeys - a thrilling trip that allowed us to zip through narrow passages, and to see and photograph sea caves, blow holes, and some of Australia’s highest sea cliffs.

The trip also allowed us to get up close to a wealth of wildlife, including sea eagles, sea birds, fur seals and one of the largest (and most playful) pods of dolphins I have seen.

Bottlenose Dolphin

Our three days on Bruny Island came to a close with a couple of cheeky stops at some of the island’s renowned food places before heading back into Hobart to say goodbye to our amazing guests Clare, David, Karen and Kathy.

Only my second ever trip to Bruny, I can’t wait to get back again and explore more next year.
